MEMBER NEWS: Applications open for the 25th intake of pioneering energy apprenticeship scheme

OPITO and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) are calling for the next generation of energy technicians to apply to APTUS, formerly the Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme (OGTAP), its prestigious apprenticeship training scheme.

This year OGTAP is rebranding with a new name, APTUS, meaning to adapt, to adjust and to be prepared. This reflects the evolution of both the programme and the entire industry as the energy transition gathers pace. Now in its 25th year, it’s one of the most successful programmes of its kind in the UK, training technicians for a future career in energy, with an employment retention rate after completion of more than 95%.

The four-year programme gives the students industry standard skills and qualifications to deliver conventional energy sources as cleanly, efficiently, and securely as possible while
charting the pathway to newer, cleaner sources and net zero. As well as industry recognised qualifications, APTUS apprentices gain hands-on experience in the workplace, while earning a salary, and a job at some of the most innovative global energy businesses. APTUS is jointly managed by OPITO, the global safety and skills organisation, and the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) on behalf of OEUK, industry operators and major contractors including CNOOC International, bp, Equinor, TotalEnergies, Wood, and Petrofac. Since its launch in 1999, the programme has trained more than 2,000 apprentices in four key disciplines: instrument and control, electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, and process operations.

Lisa McKay, Director of People and Corporate Services at OPITO, said: “I’m delighted to launch this year’s recruitment campaign. Our modern apprenticeships provide the gateway to an exciting career in an evolving industry. “Apprentices from all backgrounds can apply to become part of an innovative and ambitious industry. We both value, and harness, the unique backgrounds, talents, and perspectives of all our apprentices. Together, our diverse workforce can come together to meet the challenges we face now and in the future.”

Andrew Hockey, CEO of the ECITB said: “APTUS is a bold evolution of the OGTAP scheme which will support the growing demand for skilled workers who will be key to
achieving success in the energy transition.

“As we move into a world of new technologies and continue our journey towards net zero, it’s crucial that we provide the right pathways to attract, develop and retain a world-class
workforce.

“APTUS is a dynamic and hugely rewarding opportunity that will position apprentices as change makers in an industry which is critical to supporting global infrastructure.”

Andrew Shepperson, Team Lead of Technical Training and Competence in the UK at CNOOC International and APTUS Steering Committee Chair, said: “CNOOC International has been a longstanding sponsor company and supporter of the scheme.

“This highly sought-after programme enables apprentices to earn while they learn, work alongside some of the energy sector’s best employers, and gain globally recognised qualifications in a vital and growing industry to steer their future careers.

“Most of the skills and qualifications are highly transferable. The blend of class-room training, real life challenges, and the opportunity to make connections gives apprentices an incredible platform for success in a fast-paced and evolving industry.

“In line with our commitment to safety and sustainability, today’s APTUS apprentices will play a key role in driving the energy transition and delivering the integrated energy system of
tomorrow.”

Successful applicants will undertake a three year and nine-month apprenticeship programme split into two stages. The first 21 months are based at one the participating colleges in
Scotland. The following two years include on-the-job training with one of the sponsoring energy companies, where apprentices work towards achieving a Level 3 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at SCQF Level 7 in a chosen discipline.

The scheme creates industry-ready energy technicians who can install, test and maintain a variety of equipment. The call for applications is open until 1 April 2024, with successful
applicants starting college in September.

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
