Member News: Aberdeen Science Centre serves up days of family fun this winter

Aberdeen Science Centre will be cooking up a storm this winter as it introduces a culinary and chemistry-themed live science show, alongside a variety of fun and exciting activities for under 6s.

As part of the centre’s new Cookbook Chemistry theme, which runs throughout weekends and school holidays from November to the end of January 2025, visitors will use kitchen ingredients to explore different chemical reactions in an interactive science demonstration.

The centre will also have bite-sized chemistry drop-in activities available throughout its exhibition floor, suitable for all ages, while younger visitors can enjoy themed story sessions, arts and crafts, and a small science experiment in the dedicated Under 6s Zone.

Junior science enthusiasts are also in for a treat across November and December with the centre’s upcoming Little Explorer Days, which encourage children to learn and play in a safe environment.

The November session will include dinosaur-themed games and activities, running in the morning and afternoon on Friday, November 22. The fun will include digging for dinosaur fossils, building miniature volcanoes, and dino arts and crafts.

This will be followed by a Winter Wonderland Little Explorers Day in the morning and afternoon of Wednesday, December 18, which will allow children to make ‘snow globe’ sensory bags and bicarbonate snowmen, take part in a snowball slam game and match snowflake patterns.

Visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre who attend the Little Explorer Days in November will receive a free child’s ticket per booking for the December sessions. This cannot be exchanged for admission to any other activities or events at the centre or for a cash refund.

These activities are perfect for children aged 3-6, but under 3s will also be able to take part for free, with adult supervision. Admission to the Little Explorer Days is included in the standard entry price to the centre.

In addition to the new cookbook activities and Little Explorer Days, Aberdeen Science Centre is also reintroducing its sustainable travel discount, thanks to funding from Smarter Choices, Smarter Places.

Visitors who arrive at the centre on foot, by public transport, electric vehicle (EV), or any other means of environmentally friendly travel, will receive the 50% discount provided they can supply proof at the ticket desk.

This could include photographs captured en route, showing a bus ticket or parking an EV, bike or scooter in the centre’s car park.

The discount is available for any walk-in visitors who travel to Aberdeen Science Centre sustainably between now and Saturday, November 30.

Smarter Choices, Smarter Places is Scottish national walking charity Paths for All’s funding programme to increase active and sustainable travel throughout Scotland. The programme is grant-funded by Transport Scotland.

Lynda McConnach, public and digital coordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are gearing up for a winter of excitement at Aberdeen Science Centre. Our Cookbook Chemistry theme will provide a deliciously fun introduction to the world of chemistry, allowing visitors to see how different kitchen ingredients react to each other.

“Our upcoming dinosaur and winter-themed Little Explorer Days will also offer a fantastic way to spark that interest in science with young children, encouraging them to explore the world around them and discover something new. And with our successful sustainable travel discount returning throughout November, we are ensuring that a trip to Aberdeen Science Centre makes for a fun and affordable day out, suitable for all ages.”

Bookings are also open for Aberdeen Science Centre’s Science with Santa event, which encourages visitors to help Father Christmas solve a festive mystery. More information can be found on the Aberdeen Science Centre website.
